Company takes part in Cologne Pride for the first time

Bayer employees promote diversity and equality on Christopher Street Day

Leverkusen, July 7, 2017 – This Sunday, July 9, 2017, will see the annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) take place again as part of Cologne Pride. About one million people will march in Cologne in support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights. This year, for the first time, Bayer will also take part in the parade under the motto “Bayer: Respecting Your Right To Be You”, with a large float and around 150 employees. By doing this, the company is supporting the work of “BLEND”, the Group-wide LGBT community, and publicly affirming its commitment to a corporate culture of diversity and inclusivity which is free of discrimination.

“Bayer stands for equality and diversity because it is really important to us that all of our employees feel at ease at work and have the chance to fully develop their creativity and innovative capability,” explained Chief Human Resources Officer, Dr. Hartmut Klusik, on June 28, 2017 at the launch of this year’s Pride season at the Bayer Group’s headquarters in Leverkusen. Numerous employees, members of the Board of Management – including its Chairman, Werner Baumann – and members of the BLEND community had come together to mark the occasion and to present the parade float for Christopher Street Day. The rainbow flag, the international symbol of the LGBT movement, has flown in front of the building since then. BLEND is the Group-wide network of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender employees, working across the globe for the equal treatment of LGBT workers at Bayer.

“We are really pleased that Bayer is supporting the activities of our working group and, above all, our objective of an open, respectful and prejudice-free corporate culture so visibly and emphatically,” said Bayer employee, Tobias Ludwig, as representative of the BLEND community at the presentation of the float. Ludwig is part of the team that instigated Bayer’s participation in Cologne Pride this year.

Bayer float right in the middle of the parade with 150 activists

On Sunday, the Bayer float, designed by Jim Steenbakkers, will take part in the parade through Cologne city center in position number 41, i.e. right in the middle of the motorcade. There will be room for around 40 people on the trailer platform. 100 other members of the BLEND community and their friends are expected to march alongside the Bayer float. Bayer will post live updates from Cologne Pride via Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #BayerBlend so that other members of staff can take part in the event, as well as anyone else interested in the company.

When it launched in 2012, BLEND, the global working group of LGBT Bayer employees and their supporters, set itself the objective of actively supporting the company in becoming a globally visible model of equal opportunities and encouraging individuals within the company to flourish freely. On the basis of Bayer’s corporate values, BLEND’s activities focus on strengthening leadership and integrity in the workplace, as active inclusion is needed to strengthen teams, promote creativity and increase employee satisfaction. To this end, members of the BLEND community, which number around 500, support and advise management and all other co-workers on LGBT issues relevant to the company and its workers.
